The cultural and historical diversity of Salzburg
With its fantastic view of the Hohensalzburg Fortress, Hellbrunn Palace and the parks, the Monatsschlössl, built in 1615 by Salzburg's prince archbishop Markus Sittikus, provides an attractive architectural setting for the presentation of the Salzburg Museum's folklore collection. The Folklore Museum offers an interesting insight into the cultural and historical diversity of Salzburg.
The permanent exhibition presents a rich treasure trove of selected objects ranging from rustic ceremonial furniture and colourful traditional costumes of the region to historical Perchten and show masks.
The folklore collection
The ceremonial furniture in the exhibition impressively demonstrates the high level of carving and painting skills of Salzburg craftsmen. The theme of "folk piety" encompasses a large number of objects and is presented in an exhibition well worth seeing with pictures on inverted glass and a baroque nativity scene from Salzburg's famous Hitzl workshop. Karl Adrian, the founder of the Salzburg Museum's folklore collection, and folk musician Tobi Reiser have their own exhibition rooms. Life-size replicas of masked figures illustrate the uniqueness of Salzburg customs. Changing special exhibitions also offer an in-depth insight into Salzburg's culture, customs and folk mores.
